The Benefits of Hydrotherapy for Pets

In our practice we are fortunate to be able to utilize hydrotherapy on a daily basis. I often see the positive impact of hydrotherapy on our furry friends manifest in different ways. For some dogs it helps to increase their muscle mass post operatively, for others it leads to weight loss and improved cardiovascular fitness, and for some it simply provides a space to get some energy out and have fun splashing in the water with Holly! This month we will discuss the many benefits of hydrotherapy:

1. Joint and Muscle Recovery

Hydrotherapy is particularly beneficial for pets recovering from surgery or dealing with arthritis. The buoyancy of water reduces the strain on joints, allowing for gentle movement and strengthening of muscles with the added resistance of moving their limbs through the water, without the risk of injury.

2. Pain Relief

The warm water used in hydrotherapy can help alleviate pain and stiffness, providing comfort to pets suffering from chronic conditions. Many dogs and cats respond well to the soothing effects of water, which can help improve their overall quality of life. Additionally, continued exercise in this manner can help to alleviate joint pain by strengthening the muscular support around each joint.

3. Improved Mobility

For pets with mobility issues, hydrotherapy can help increase range of motion by varying the water height throughout their session and allowing them to move through their entire range of motion without the added strain of gravity. The resistance of water encourages active movement, promoting strength and coordination. This is especially useful for senior pets or those with injuries.

4. Weight Management/Cardiovascular Fitness

Water-based exercises can help pets maintain a healthy weight. Swimming and walking in water burn calories while being easier on their bodies than traditional exercises. This is crucial for pets who may be overweight and need to shed some pounds. Additionally, a regular exercise regimen, just like in people, helps to promote improved cardiovascular fitness – increasing their strength and endurance with time.

5. Stress Reduction

Many pets find hydrotherapy sessions relaxing. The calming environment and gentle movements can reduce anxiety and stress, making it a great option for pets that are nervous or apprehensive.

Incorporating hydrotherapy into your pet’s care routine can provide numerous health benefits. If you’re considering this treatment for your pet, do not hesitate to reach out to our rehab department so we can help develop a tailored plan that meets their specific needs. With the right approach, hydrotherapy can be a game-changer in your pet’s recovery and overall well-being!

October Patient of the Month: Buster

Our October pet of the month is Buster! Buster is another staff pet of ours who has benefitted from the rehab department here at Vet Partners. Early last year Buster ruptured both of his cranial cruciate ligaments, and unfortunately needed surgery on both of his knees. He had his initial surgery in February, followed by the other in May of 2024.

He was a CHAMPION in the hydrotherapy tank! He spent several sessions as week in the tank working toward maintaining his muscle mass and helping to encourage appropriate use of his hindlimbs. With the help of his dedicated mom and our Rehab Technician Holly, Buster has fully recovered and enjoys his days here at this clinic watching everyone work and playing with his four-legged friends!
