Our experienced veterinary teams provide safe, gentle, and affordable pet spay and neuter surgery for dogs and cats in the Plymouth, Edina, Apple Valley, Osseo and Minneapolis areas.
These common procedures are cornerstones of preventative healthcare, providing significant long-term health benefits for your pet. Learn more about how spaying or neutering can contribute to a longer, healthier life for your companion.
Benefits of Spay & Neuter Surgeries
Health Benefits
Spaying (females) prevents uterine infections and significantly reduces the risk of breast/mammary cancer, which is malignant in about 50% of dogs and 90% of cats.
Neutering (males) eliminates the risk of testicular cancer and reduces the risk of prostate problems.
Both procedures can lead to longer, healthier lives for pets, as spayed or neutered animals tend to live longer on average.
Behavioral Benefits
Spayed females will not go into heat, avoiding behaviors such as yowling, frequent urination, and attracting males.
Neutered males are less likely to roam, mark territory with strong-smelling urine, mount other animals or objects, and may show reduced aggression.
Both sexes are less likely to escape or get into fights, reducing the risk of injury or getting lost.
Community & Cost Benefits
Prevents unwanted litters, helping control pet overpopulation and reducing the number of animals euthanized in shelters each year.
Spaying/neutering is more cost-effective than caring for a litter or treating diseases that the surgery helps prevent.
Some cities require spaying/neutering by law, with fines for non-compliance.
Potential risks of Spay & Neuter Surgeries
As with any invasive procedure, spay and neuters are not without risk. Although rare in most cases, it’s good to know the potential risks of undergoing these procedures. Please consult your Vet if you’re concerned about any of the following risks.
What Recovery Looks Like

Immediate Post-Surgery
Pets are fully anesthetized during surgery and feel no pain at the time.
Mild to moderate discomfort is normal after surgery, especially for females. Pain management is recommended and provided by veterinarians.
Home Care & Activity Restriction
Restrict activity for 10–14 days: no running, jumping, or rough play to prevent complications like incision opening or bleeding.
Use an Elizabethan collar (“cone”) to prevent licking or chewing at the surgical site.
Keep pets indoors and confined to a small area or crate to limit movement and exposure to potential infection.
Monitor the incision daily for signs of redness, swelling, discharge, or opening. Contact your veterinarian if you notice any of these.
If your pet is too active, talk to your Veterinarian about adding in medications to help with sedation.
Feeding & Comfort
Offer a small meal after returning home, then resume normal feeding unless otherwise directed.
Avoid sudden diet changes or human food during recovery.
Recovery Timeline
Most cats and dogs recover within 7–14 days, but always follow your veterinarian’s specific advice.
Stitches may be dissolvable or require removal; your vet will advise on follow-up care.

Our Positive Reviews Tell the Story of How We Love and Treat Our Pet Patients
I’ve met several vets and vet techs and you can tell they really care for the animals. And specifically Dr. Lee is the best! She is incredibly responsive when I have questions or need guidance (our dog has had two surgeries with VP), she is patient and very kind.

Love the staff and service at Vet Partners. The facility is absolutely beautiful and there are so many tests that they can do in house like annual heart worm. Dr. Vance clearly loves animals and makes my dogs feel like VIPs.

My cat developed and abscess on Sunday night. Called first thing Monday morning and they got me in 2 hours later. The friendly, professional staff made the whole ordeal quick and pretty much painless for me. My cat is recovering quickly. Overall I would highly recommend Vet Partners to anyone needing pet care.

We brought our dog in for emergency surgery today, and the vet (and staff) could not have been more kind. They answered our questions and advised us without overcharging us. We had never been to this clinic before, but we will switch. Dr. Temple was amazing!
